Tharu bandh called off

KATHMANDU: Stating that Sunday and Monday were auspicious days for wedding, the Tharu Kalyankarini Sabha (Tharu Welfare Assembly) today called off its previously declared Tarai bandh.

However, the assembly decided to go ahead with their month-long nationwide campaign for ‘multiple federal units’ in the country’s southern plain.

Issuing a press statement here today, Sabha general secretary Rajkumar Lekhi said that tomorrow’s torch light rally and Monday’s general strike in the Tarai had been called off considering its adverse impact on marriage ceremony.

But the Sabha decided to launch nationwide campaign calling for multiple Pradeshes to safeguard the rights and interest of the Tharuhat Tarai beginning February 13.

This national campaign would continue for one month, the statement said.

A gathering of Tharus held in the capital recently concluded that the 14 federal units proposed by the Constituent Assembly Committee on State Restructuring and Distribution of State Power did not empower the people of the Tarai.
