What’s broken

Thousands of people have to pass through this street from Jadibuti to reach many villages on the south from the Araniko Highway, including Imadol, Tikathali and Sanogaun. However, the lack of street lamps, which are defunct since July, scares the passers-by in the evening.

The initial 500 meters section of the street from Jadibuti lies within the Jadibuti area, which is densely populated, and may not need any street lamp due to the light coming from the shops and houses. But the next 400-metre section of the street, after crossing the Manohara Bridge and before reaching the residential area, looks scary in the evening due to the lack of street lamps.

This section of the street looks abandoned and isolated as soon as evening begins. This is more so as the street passes through the bank of Manohara and Hanumante rivers. Imadol locals have complained that it’s scary to pass the street in the evening. They said their heartbeats go up due to fear whenever they have to cross the street in the evening and night.

The street lamps were first installed on the initiative of a committee — Tripur Sangam Bhu-Samrakshyan and Tole Sudhar Samati (TSBTSS) — set up by the locals of Imadol-1 in 2003. But the lamps stopped working completely since July this year due to the lack maintenance. The committee said the street lies within the Madhyapur Thimi municipality and it begins from Jadibuti, which lies within the Kathmandu Metropolitan City. And, as the users of the streets are mostly Lalitpur folks, none of the municipalities is bothered about maintaining the street lamps.

Who’s responsible

“Sometimes bad boys hit the bulbs with stones and damage them. We are constructing sewerage at Imadol-1, and we have not been able to repair the street lamps. Due to the lack of funds, we cannot repair the street lamps as and when they get damaged. As soon as the construction of sewerage ends, we will repair the street lamps,” Bogati said.

Ram Keshar Bogati, president, TSBTSS
