Two arrested for staging fake robbery

Kathmandu, July 26

Police have arrested two persons, who hid one kilogram of gold and staged a robbery drama to gain possession of the precious metal.

The suspects are Khadga Bahadur Sunar, 53, and Bachan Sunar, 25, of Dang. Metropolitan Police Crime Division deployed a special team at the alleged crime scene in Gongabu yesterday evening after the duo reported to law enforcement officers that they were robbed of the gold. Superintendent of Police Narendra Prasad Upreti at MPCD said the duo kept the gold in the custody of Gongabu-based Ammar Jewellers and sought MPCD’s help to arrest the ‘robbers’. They had complained of being robbed of the gold, a bank cheque and mobile phone sets by three unidentified persons.

During investigation, police found the Sunar duo on the wrong side of the law and arrested them immediately for legal action. SP Upreti said they staged a fake robbery and tried to mislead the police to usurp the gold.

Khadga Bahadur, the mastermind behind the fake robbery, is also a member of Federation of Nepal Gold and Silver Dealers’ Association, Dang chapter. He had bought the gold at Rs 4.83 million from New Road Branch Office of Siddhartha Development Bank yesterday. They had been staying in room number 202 of Gongabu-based Rapti Guest House for the past five days. He hatched a plan to stage a fake robbery from the guest house after purchasing the gold, SP Upreti said. Police have also recovered the gold.
