UN official arriving

KATHMANDU: United Nations Deputy Secretary General Jan Eliasson is arriving in Nepal on a three-day visit on Saturday.

Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Tara Prasad Pokhrel said Eliasson is visiting Nepal in connection with the UN World Humanitarian Summit scheduled to be held in Istanbul, Turkey on May 23-24.

According to Pokharel, Eliasson will call on Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and extend an invitation to the latter to attend the summit. It is learnt that PM Oli is less likely to visit Turkey, but he would instead assign Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Kamal Thapa to attend the UN conference.

The senior UN official will also visit Chautara of Sindhupalchowk district to take stock on the post-earthquake reconstruction works.

The senior UN official will also call on President Bidhya Devi Bhandari.
