UNMIN condemns Shrestha’s killing

Kathmandu, May 19:

The United Nations Mission in Nepal today condemned the killing of Ram Hari Shrestha, which commanders of People’s Liberation Army have acknowledged to UNMIN was committed by PLA members.

“This act is a serious breach of the commitments made in the Agreement on Monitoring the Management of Arms and Armies reached between the CPN (Maoist) and the then government, as well as of fundamental human rights,” a release issued by UNMIN said.

UNMIN arms monitors have conducted a preliminary inquiry, the results of which will be presented at the next meeting of Joint Monitoring Coordination Committee, it said. JMCC, chaired by UNMIN includes representatives of the Nepal Army and the Maoist army.

“We have been informed that the OHCHR is following the probe that is being carried out by police,” it added. UNMIN also called on the CPN-Maoist to cooperate with police to ensure that all those responsible for ordering or carrying out the abduction or killing are punished.
