US for free, fair, transparent second round of local level elections

KATHMANDU: The US Embassy in Kathmandu on Monday has urged all the stakeholders to conduct a free, fair and transparent second round of local elections in 334 local units in 35 districts of Provinces 1, 5 and 7 on Wednesday.

In a statement today, the diplomatic mission said, all the stakeholders including the Government of Nepal, Election Commission, Civil Society, political parties and citizens to create conducive environment to peacefully exercise democratic right to elect local representatives.

"Elections are how citizens express their political will, a right which is guaranteed by the laws and constitution of Nepal and Article 21 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights," it said in a statement.

The US diplomatic mission also said it is committed to working with all stakeholders for a peaceful, inclusive, broadly-supported, and credible election process.

Earlier, the first round of local level elections were commenced in Province number 3, 4 and 6 on May 14 to select local representatives in 281 local bodies.

Meanwhile, the third round of local level elections in Province number 2 is slated for September 18.
