1 dead, 7 injured in Daunne pileup

KATHMANDU: A person died and seven others sustained injuries in a multi-vehicle pileup involving six vehicles in Binayi Triveni Rural Municipality-2 along the East-West Highway of Nawalparasi district on Monday.

The deceased has been identified as Bhagawati Karki (50) and injured as Uday Rokaya (45), Mina Rokaya (40), Bishnu Regmi (40), Yasodha Dhakal (55), Tulsi Pariyar (45), and Jit Kumar Paudel (38) all residents of Binayi Triveni Rural Municipality-2 of the district.

According to police, the incident occurred when the tractor (Lu 3 Ta 4500) en route from Daunne to Dumkibas collided head-on with the truck (Na 4 Kha 6690) in the downward slope near Daunne, before three other vehicles — tractor (Lu 3 Ta 5695), Pickup jeep (Lu 1 Kha 5322), bus (Na 6 Kha 5429), and a tanker (Na 3 Kha 5936) — crashed onto them, injuring eight tractor passengers yesterday.

The injured were rushed to the Bharatupur-based Chitwan Medical College, however, Karki breathed her last during the course of treatment. Among the seven undergoing treatment there, four are reported to be in serious condition, informed the Dumkibas-based Area Police Office.

It has been learnt that all six drivers of involved vehicles have fled the scene.

Meanwhile, further investigation into the case and search is on for the absconding drivers, said police.
