10 students held in Nepalgunj

Nepalgunj, January 27:

Police today arrested ten students belonging to eight student unions from the premises of the Mahendra Multiple Campus. The students had earlier staged an hour-long chakkajam in front of the campus to protest against the arrests of students during Nepal bandh yesterday.

They had obstructed the road in front of the campus by burning tyres at around 11:30 am today.

The police and students pelted stones at each other for about an hour after police tried to clear the road.

Police fired many rounds of tear gas shells to disperse the student demonstrators.

Police then had entered the campus premises and assaulted and arrested the students there.

Police also arrested some new students who came to the campus to fill up their forms. Police, however failed to arrest the student leaders.

Diwakar Rimal, Deepak Poudel, Saujanya Neupane, Dhan Bahadur Chand, Bhumi Raj Acharya, Bharat Timilsina and Jagadish Tharu were among those arrested, the students said.

The students are being kept at District Police Office. The police had also entered the administration room and campus chief’s room and misbehaved with campus officials.

The eight student unions organised a press conference this evening where they threatened to close all the academic institutions of the district if the arrested students were not released within 24 hours.

They also demanded treatment for the injured students.

Meanwhile, the students have declared to boycott the movies of actress Manisha Koirala in Banke district.

The students said they made the decision because she spoke in favour of present autocratic government.
