The overloaded night coach (Na 6 Kha 1467) heading to Kathmandu from Rajbiraj, plunged into the Trishuli River from the turning point at Bange in Ghatabesi at around 6:00 am today, according to Superintendent of Police Dhruba Raj Raut at the District Police Office, Dhading.

Security personnel from Nepal Police, Nepal Army and Armed Police Force with the help of locals, jointly rescued 16 injured passengers who were fallen into the river in the accident along the Prithvi Highway. The teams have recovered 19 dead bodies until now while the search is on for other missing passengers.

All the injured passengers were rushed to the Gajuri Primary Health Post and the Gajuri Hospital from where two of the critically injured were rushed to the Trauma Centre in Kathmandu.

Police Inspector Krishna Prasad Sapkota at the District Traffic Police said that two passengers who had managed to swim across the river have lost contact.

Most probably the accident was occurred when the driver failed to take the high speed bus under control at the turning point due to poorly visible roads, police informed.

An injured passenger told police that the bus was carrying 17 passengers from Rajbiraj to Kathmandu before it added 35 passengers at Hetauda on the way. The new driver who had driven from Hetauda seemed to be in haste, the injured said and added that he was driving too fast.

Meanwhile, the search operation is being carried out in the river, said police.

Road accidents in Nepal, which is mostly covered with mountains, are generally blamed on poorly maintained vehicles and road conditions.

12 dead, 16 hurt, around 26 missing as bus plunges into Trishuli River

13 rescued as night coach plunges into Trishuli River in Dhading

KATHMANDU: A passenger bus heading to Kathmandu from Rajbiraj, plunged into the Trishuli River and disappeared, in Gajuri Rural Municipality of Dhading district, at around 5:00 am today.

Police Inspector Krishna Prasad Sapkota at the District Traffic Police confirmed that the overloaded night coach (Na 6 Kha 1467) plunged into the Trishuli River from the turning point at Bange in Ghatabesi in Gajuri Rural Municipality.

Police and locals jointly rescued 13 injured passengers who were fallen into the river in the accident along the Prithvi Highway.

The injured passengers were rushed to Gajuri Primary Health Post and Gajuri Hospital.

Inspector Sapkota further informed that two passengers who had managed to swim across the river have lost contact.

Most probably the accident was occurred when the driver failed to take the high speed bus under control at the turning point due to poorly visible roads, police informed.

The status of the passengers in the bus is yet to be ascertained.

The search is on for the missing passengers, informed police.
