24 years on, construction of BP Park still hangs in limbo

Phidim, October 31

Although construction of the BP Park in the district headquarters of Panchthar, Phidim, had started some 24 years ago, a pillar is all that one can see at the construction site after all these years.

Worse still, the land allocated for the park has turned into a grazing field, while the only pillar is also on the verge of collapse. The District Health Office had provided two ropanis of land BP Memorial Construction Committee for the construction of the park in 1992.

Later the committee was developed as BP Koirala Research Institute in 1999. But no construction has taken place in the park for almost two-and-a-half decades, rued the institute’s Chairperson Shyam Bikram Parajuli. Locals said the construction had not progressed due to negligence of the committee.

The government had provided a budget of Rs 50,000 for the park’s construction in 1999. “We built a pillar with the money, but we were forced to half construction works due to lack of sufficient budget, said Parajuli.

The construction of the park was further obstructed by the Federal Limbuwan State Council, which was opposed to building the monument of late BP Koirala on the land owned by the institute.

Suman Lama, a local, however, said that complained that construction of the park could progress due to the negligence of the committee.
