3 die, 1 missing in Panchthar landslides

PANCHTHAR: A person was killed when a landslide swept away three houses in Phalelung Rural Municipality-1 of Panchthar district in the wee hours of Friday.

The deceased has been identified as local resident Tila Chand Lohar (60).

According to police, the landslide swept away three houses located in Chhukpading at around 5:30 am today.

The landslide completely damaged the house belonging to Ganga Kafle and Tanka Kafle, partly damaged Neelu Gadaili's house and swept away domestic animals owned by Shyam Magar. At least six other houses are at the risk of being swept away, informed police.

The teams of security personnel deployed from the District Police Office, Armed Police Force and Nepal Army have reached the site to relocate the local residents to the safety.

Meanwhile, the body of Lohar is being taken out from the rubbles, said police.

It has been learned that the incident site locates 38 kilometres north of Phidim, the district headquarters. The transportation facility is available up to 30 km after which the 8-km path has to be walked to reach the site.

In a separate incident, two persons have died and another one has gone missing after a landslide swept away five houses in Phalelung Rural Municipality-3, in the district today.

The deceased have been identified as local resident Bishnu Bhakta Rai (60), his teenage daughter Sushmita Rai. The one who has gone missing is Rai's granddaughter Pratha Rai.

It has been learned that Rai was a manual worker in a hydropower project.

Meanwhile, the locals with the help of security personnel are searching for the missing girl in the landslide debris.

It is yet to evaluate the damages caused by the natural disaster.
