4 held for attacking ex-lawmaker Budhani Devi Mahato

JANAKPURDHAM: Police on Tuesday arrested four persons for their alleged involvement in the attack on former Maoist lawmaker Budhani Devi Mahato.

According to Inspector Mukesh Pokharel of the Area Police Office, Gaushala, those detained have been identified as Rajeshwor Yadav, Laxmi Yadav, Naresh Yadav and Nathuni Yadav of Laxminiya-8 in Janakpur. They were arrested from their houses.

Carrying homemade weapons and sticks, a group of eight to 10 persons, including Nathuni Yadav, had barged into Mahato's house at Laksminia on Monday night and physically assaulted her.

Nathuni Yadav is said to be a cadre of Nepali Congress.

Police said they are looking for the others who were involved in the attack.

She was severely injured after being thrashed by them, according to Mahadev Yadav, a local UCPN-Maoist leader. She cannot stand and speak, he informed.

Mahato, who was a member of the first Constituent Assembly from the UCPN-Maoist, is is currently affiliated with the CPN-Revolutionary Maoist.

The reason behind the attack, however, is still unclear, Inspector Pokharel said.

Mahato has been admitted to the Janakpur Zonal Hospital for treatment.

Doctors involved in her treatment said Mahato has received injuries and blue marks all over her body.

Further investigation into the case is underway, police said.
