Birgunj, June 1:

Police yesterday arrested four Indian youths on charges of attempted murder of a Birgunj jail inmate.

The quartet, Bikram Yadav, Pradeep Kumar Shah, Uma Shanker Baitha and Ranabir Pandey Rishi had planned to kill Sona Lal Yadav Nanki, a convicted drug dealer serving sentence in the Birgunj jail. Other five involved in the case are at large, said District Police Office, Parsa.

Sona Lal is the leader of the inmates in the prison and has been given a facility to go out of the jail accompanied by police personnel, said Superintendent of Police at the DPO, Parsa, Bir Bahadur Rana said at a press meet, today, adding that the group had planned to kill Sona Lal while he was out of the prison. Acting on a tip-off, police arrested Bikram Yadav and Ranabir Pandey from local Ganesh Man Chowk.

Although the group, who were on two motorcycles, shot at the police, no casualty was reported. Five persons of the group, including Maqbul Miyan and Devendra, fled after the firing, police said. The other two accomplices, Uma Shanker and Pradeep, were arrested from the prison compound when they came to meet Sona Lal. “I came to kill Sona Lal, who killed my brother,” Bikram told media persons. Police said Sona Lal killed Bikram’s brother Jagadish Yadav in 2004.

A 9mm pistol, a home-made pistol, six rounds of bullets, a mobile set and three hundred grams of white powder were seized from the group.

The police have also confiscated the motorcycles used by the group.
