Abused bride walks out on husband

Sankhuwasabha, May 3:

Six days into marriage, bridegroom Basant Kumar Chapagain of Khandbari municipality-10, Sankhuwasabha district, started beating up Babita for not bringing computer, motorcycle and sofa set as dowry.

Today, Babita had her revenge. When neighbours remonstrated against the torture inflicted on Babita, Basant had to fall at her feet and beg forgiveness. She refused to remain his wife and the marriage was annulled. Divorce papers were drawn up in the presence of neighbours.

Basant returned Rs 1.5 lakh that he had taken for the vermilion ceremony and also took back gold ornaments and clothes that he had presented to Babita. Basant, his parents and sister had to apologise in a public meeting held by locals on the premises of Mangala Devi temple.

Babita said her mother-in-law and sister-in-law had begun verbally abusing her since first day of their marriage. The bride said she was forced to do cooking, laundry and wash all pots and pans. Her father Pushp Pokhrel said he gave whatever the groom’s side had demanded.

Pokhrel said he would set aside Rs 1.5 lakh returned to him from the vermilion ceremony for Babita’s education. Locals said this was the first incident of its kind in the district. Some of them averred that the punishment to Basant was not enough and sought to thrash him.
