Agitators urge NHRC to probe Tarai violence

KATHMANDU: The protesting United Democratic Madhesi Front on Sunday urged the National Human Rights Commission to probe into violent incidents occurred during the Tarai-Madhes agitation.

A UDMF team reached the Commission office in Pulchok of Lalitpur today and handed over a memorandum to its chief Anup Raj Sharma.

According to the Commission's spokesperson Mohna Ansari, the Front demanded action against human rights violators as per the criminal laws.

The agitating alliance argued that the government suppressed their protest programmes notwithstanding their right to carry out peaceful demonstrations.

In response, Sharma said the government should address protest programmes carried out for identity and existence at the earliest with a due seriousness.

He assured the delegation that the Commission was fairly monitoring and investigating into the violent incidents during the protests.

Tarai Madhes Democratic Party Vice-Chairman Hridayesh Tripathi, Sadbhawana Party Co-Chairman Laxman Lal Karna, Tarai Madhes Sadbhawana Party Senior Leader Ram Naresh Raya and Federal Socliast Forum-Nepal Chief Whip Shivaji Yadav among others had gone to the Commission to meet the Commissioners.
