Alleged abductor held after 19 months

KATHMANDU: A man allegedly absconding after abducting a man from Saptari district around 19 months ago was arrested from Sundhara of Kathmandu on Saturday.

Raj Kumar Thakur aka Raja (38), a permanent resident of Lahan Municipality-7 of Siraha district, was arrested from a police team deployed from the Lahan Area Police Office of Siraha from Sundhara of the Capital.

Thakur is accused of abducting a driver named Guru Dayal Mahato from Pansera-7 of Saptari district, on November 15, 2014.

According to police, Thakur and Mahendra Mahato, an Indian citizen from Bihar of India, had demanded Rs 5 million ransom from the victim's after seizing his mobile phone and Rs 37,000 cash, according to police.

The duo had taken the driver to India forcing him to leave his vehicle near the Kharchuiya bridge in Saptari, police added.

They had warned of killing him if the ransom was not paid.

The victim, however, was rescued from the clutches of abductors 31 days after the abduction.

Police had already nabbed Mahato and two others in connection to the case.

Meanwhile, Thakur has been handed over the Saptari District Police Office for further action.
