Another transport strike hits far-west
Mahendranagar, July 21:
Already plagued by the indefinite strike called by traders against the syndicate system of truckers, the far-western region was hit further today due to another indefinite transport strike called Seti-Mahakali Bus and Minibus Entrepreneurs’ Committee.
The bandh was called to protest the manhandling of the office bearers of the committee and bus drivers by an unidentified gang yesterday and demanding punishment to the guilty.
President of the Seti-Mahakali Bus and Minibus Entrepreneurs’ Committee Gopal Bhandari said the transport service was disrupted indefinitely demanding legal action against those who manhandled bus drivers and office bearers of the committee.
Earlier, the unidentified gang manhandled the office bearers of the committee and bus drivers at Kailali’s Bauniya when they were heading to Nepalgunj for official work yesterday.
He also blamed that the Kailali Chamber of Commerce and Industry for the incident.
Bazaar, factories, businesses and educational institutions remained shut in the many places of the region due to the strike called by the businessmen today.
Stocks of rice, oil, lentils, medicines and other essential goods have run dry in Dadeldhura, Doti, Achham, Bajura, Bajhang, Baitadi districts due to the strike.
The chamber had launched a phase-wise agitation against the syndicate system by boycotting loading and unloading of goods since July 1 and calling an indefinite general strike since Friday.
Meanwhile, infuriated at the committee’s announcement of the strike today, passengers staged demonstrations and handed over a memorandum to the District Administration Office today to resolve the problem.
At least a hundred passengers staged a demonstration in Mahendranagar by burning tyres at Bhanuchowk.
In the memorandum, they called on the DAO to immediately initiate action to resolve the issue.
Administrative officer at the DAO Hari Prasad Aryal said the situation had become complicated. However, he assured the passengers of taking appropriate action to resolve the problem.
