ANWA-R presses for republic

Kathmandu, September 25:

A sister-wing of the Maoists, All Nepal Women’s Association-Revolutionary, today organised a rally demanding declaration of republic and proportional representation system for the upcoming constituent assembly polls.

The rally began from Bhadrakali and went through Shahidgate and Bir Hospital road to converge into a mass meeting at Ratna Park.

Addressing the meet, senior Maoist leader Pampha Bhusal said there was no meaning of going to polls without declaring Nepal a republic and adopting a fully a proportional representation system.

She added that the upcoming Maoists-led movement would sweep away all the parties supporting feudal forces and the monarchy.

Recalling her experience as a minister, former minister Hisila Yami said Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala used to “respect official of India and the United States but failed to attend the cabinet meetings.”

“We couldn’t effect change from the government and have decided to join the public to declare Nepal a republic from the streets,” she said.

ANWA-R president Jayapuri Gharti said the decade-long people’s war has proved that there was nothing women couldn’t do. “We are ready to sacrifice anything for the sake of the Nepali people and the country. The government should take the responsibility of any untoward incident that might take place due to our movement,” Jayapuri Gharti said.
