Army must be kept free from politics, says CoAS

Kathmandu, February 23:

President Dr Ram Baran Yadav today expressed confidence that the Nepal Army would improve its relations with the public to strengthen the base of democratic system and culture in the changed context.

Addressing a special function organised by the Nepal Army to mark the Army Day at the Army Pavilion at Tundikhel, the President lauded the NA for accomplishing its national responsibilities, including nation’s defence, protection of sovereignty, development and relief activities during the times of natural calamities. He also said the

NA’s contribution in international peacekeeping had heightened the pride of

Nepali people. “I am happy to say that the NA has established itself as a reliable organisation by its honesty, dignity and commitment to discipline and patriotism,” the President said.

Speaking on the occasion, Chief of Army Staff General Rookmangud Katawal said the NA was always ready to protect the existence and dignity of the country and people by upholding the decrees of government. “Nepali people are at the most important stage of the peace process now. It is the major responsibility of the NA to safeguard national unity, geographical integrity and sovereignty. The NA heartily accepts the decision of Nepali people made through a democratic process,” Katawal added. Stressing on the need to keep the NA away from party politics, Katawal said the army men had clearly understood that they should refrain from party politics like the armies of other democratic countries.

Reiterating his commitment to civil supremacy, Katawal said, “We have firm commitments to democratic system, human rights, rule of law, social harmony, cultural diversity, good governance and inclusion of women, indigenous and backward groups.”

During the function, the NA personnel performed different cultural and musical programmes, games, parade and para-jumps.

Vice President Paramananda Jha, Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal, Chief Justice Kedar Prasad Giri, chiefs of constitutional bodies, dignitaries and foreign delegates, among others, attended the programme.
