Arrest Province 2 minister, Jaleshwor mayor: Court

Janakpurdham, August 3

The Janakpur High Court has ordered the police to arrest Province 2 Rastriya Janata Party-Nepal Provincial Assembly member and Social Development Minister Abhiram Sharma and Jaleshwor Municipality Mayor Ramashankar Mishra, also an RJP-N leader, in connection with the killing of Armed Police Force Assistant Sub-inspector Thaman BK during the Madhes agitation in September 2015. Mahottari District Court conveyed the high court’s order to the District Police Office today.

Mahottari police chief Superintendent of Police Kuber Kathayat confirmed that they had got the high court’s order in writing. “We have to produce the duo in the court,” he said.

Police had charged six Madhesi leaders, accusing them of beating Thaman BK to death. Two of them are already in judicial custody at Jaleshwor prison, while Sharma, Mishra and two others have been absconding.

The High Court order follows a petition filed by BK’s wife seeking the arrest of those involved in the sub-inspector’s killing.

The High Court had corresponded its decision to the Mahottari District Court yesterday via e-mail. “After we wrote to the district court of Mahottari and the latter conveyed the order to the police, it’s up to the police to arrest the accused and present them in the court,” said the High Court Registrar Man Bahadur Karki.

Meanwhile, RJP-N has accused the government of breaching its previous agreement. “There was an understanding that the government would withdraw political cases, but the government has betrayed us by not honouring its agreement,” said RJP-N General Secretary Manish Suman.
