Bhutanese refugees stage rally

Damak, December 4

Bhutanese refugees staged demonstration before the office of the United Nations High Commission for Refugees in Damak, Jhapa, yesterday demanding repatriation.

The refugees wishing to return to their home country took out a rally and chanted slogans before reaching the UNHCR section office for submission of a memorandum. Bhutanese refugees have been languishing in camps of Jhapa and Morang for the past three decades.

They have sought support from the UN body to facilitate their repatriation with assurance of obtaining property ownership.

The rally taken out under the aegis of National Reconciliation Committee, Bhutan, had submitted a five-point memorandum to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres through UNHCR Damak Office Chief Khalid Fansa, shared committee chair Krishna Bir Tamang.

The refugees noted that their social, economic and familial structures had been broken because of living outside the country for years.
