Bhutanese refugees stage sit-in

Jhapa, February 24:

Bhutanese Refugees, demanding their return to Bhutan, staged a sit-in protest at Mechi Bridge of Jhapa, today.

Refugees, over 50 years of age, have been organising civil disobedience for two hours, from 11 am to 1 pm, at Nepali side of the bridge every Friday since November 17, 2005. They, however, staged the program at the No-man’s Land, today.

Indian Armed Police Force has been guarding the Indian side of the bridge with high alert. An Indian security personnel said, “We have orders to restrict entrance of the refugees into the Indian land.” The sit-in in the middle of the bridge had created blocked the road.
