Bid to ban Hindi songs, films flayed

KATHMANDU; Broadcasting Association of Nepal has expressed concern about the pressure exerted by the Unified CPN-Maoist on Chitwan-based independent media not to air Hindi songs.

In an appeal circulated to the media on Friday, Maoist-led United Nation People’s Movement had called on the radio stations, cable television networks and cinema halls not to air Hindi songs or screen Hindi movies till January 24 in the wake of ‘movement for national sovereignty’ spearheaded by the party.

“The existing law has empowered the independent media to devise content keeping in mind the needs, wants and demands of the audiences,” stated a press release issued by BAN in the capital today. “BAN condemns the Maoist dictate that curtails the fundamental rights of media and citizens. The move is against democratic system,” read the statement.

“The role played by Nepali media for the good of national sovereignty can’t be underestimated. It is farfetched to assume that restriction on Hindi songs and movies will cement national sovereignty,” adds the statement.
