Big 3 decide to hold provincial and parliamentary elections in single phase

KATHMANDU: The three major political parties on Wednesday have decided to hold the provincial and parliamentary elections in single phase.

The meeting called by Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba at his official residence in Baluwater this afternoon had forged consensus to hold the elections in a day.

The leaders have also decided to finalise on the constitution amendment bill tabled at the Legislature-Parliament by the third week of August and hold both elections before December.

During the meeting senior leaders from the ruling coalition Nepali Congress, CPN-Maoist Centre and main opposition CPN-UML leaders were present.

Earlier, the Election Commission had urged the government to declare the polling dates.

However, the Election Commission has stressed that the elections could not be held in single phase due to technical and legal hassles.

As per the constitution, all the levels of elections should be held by January 21, 2018, to implement the federalism and constitution in the country.

The third phase of local level elections in eight districts in Terai region is slated for September 18.

It has been learned that the all party meeting is being held at the PM's Official residence in Baluwatar this evening.
