Biratnagar youth held from Nepal-India border on cybercrime charges

KATHMANDU: Police on Friday said they recently arrested a 24-year-old youth on cybercrime charges.

A team deployed from the Metropolitan Police Crime Division in cooperation with the Saptari District Police Office nabbed Bikas Kumar Sah, a permanent resident of Biratnagar-12 of Morang, currently residing in Tilathi, of Saptari.

He was arrested from a village near the Nepal-India border in Saptari district on Thursday, police said.

Police accused Sah of creating many fake profiles in the names of various people currently living in Kathmandu and Lalitpur district on social networking websites and sending friend requests to the victims' friends.

Further, he would also request money from them claiming he desperately needed it with an intention of fraud, police said.

The MPCD had received a number of complaints about such cases, which compelled it to begin the search.

Meanwhile, police said further investigation is underway to indict him under the Electronic Transactions Act, 2006.
