Birgunj tense as UDMF cadres clash with Indian nationals

BIRGUNJ: Tension ran high in Birgunj after a clash broke out between agitating United Democratic Madhesi Front cadres and Indian nationals at Miteri Bridge on the Birgunj-Raxaul border on Saturday afternoon.

A cadre of the Front was injured in the clash.

The clash broke out after the UDMF cadres under the command of Tarai Madhes Democratic Party General Secretary Jitendra Sonal tried to stage a sit-in at the Bridge.

The clash ensued a day after local entrepreneurs of both the Nepali and Indian sides opened the border after 135 days.

The cadres of the UDMF had been staging demonstrations in various parts of Tarai including Birgunj since September 24 demanding amendments in the newly adopted constitution including the issue of provincial boundaries.

It has been learned that Nepal police personnel chased away UDMF cadres from the incident site.
