Budhi Gandaki blockage threat looming

DAMAULI, June 27: Scores of families on the banks of Budhi Gandaki River have been displaced in the wake of landslides falling into the river in Machhikhola village of Gorkha.

Around 50 families residing on the river bank have left their places in search of safety following the reports of landslide debris, falling from nearby hills between Kasigaun and Lapu VDCs, causing possible threat of river blockade.

Inspector Rabindra Khanal of Area Police Office Arughat confirmed landslides in the area. He, however, ruled out any danger in the current scenario, saying that the river had not been blocked to the extent of flooding.

“Though landslides have been falling into the river, it is not a major threat since the river water has flown the debris,” said Inspector Khanal, adding that the displaced families had moved to safer grounds.

Dipendra Poudel, Acting Chief District Officer of Gorkha, urged locals not to panic. “There is nothing to worry because such minor landslides were seen in the past as well,” said Poudel.
