KATHMANDU: Accusing the government of making changes in important issues of an agreement with him, Dr Govinda KC of the Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital said he would resort to the hunger strike again from tomorrow.

The senior orthopaedic surgeon at the TUTH has served an ultimatum till 4 pm tomorrow to “correct the misdeeds and ratify the agreement in its entirety.”

A Cabinet meeting today had decided to form a Health Professional’s Education Commission (HPEC) under the leadership of Education Minister.

“The report prepared by Kedar Bhakta Mathema-led panel, however, had recommended to form the Commission under the Prime Minister,” Dr KC’s aide Dr Jiwan Kshetry told THT Online over phone.

“We have made substantial compromises on our part for reaching the agreement,” Dr KC said in a statement this evening. “Not a single change, however minor, is acceptable to us… absolutely not.”

Dr Kshetry argued that if the Commission was formed under the Education Minister, but not under the Prime Minister as recommended, it would further problematise the sector for some mandates of the Commission are directly related to the Ministry of Health and Population also.

Likewise, the Cabinet meeting has missed to decide anything about halting issuing the letters of interest to the Kathmandu-based medical colleges, Kshetry added.

“Other decisions, however, are okay for us,” clarified the doctor.
