Cabinet okays garbage bill

LALITPUR: The Cabinet has finally approved the long anticipated Bill on garbage management, which allows private sector to set up garbage plant and punish the

obstructers in waste disposal process.

The Bill lays down tough rules against those obstructing garbage collection and disposal.

The 2009 Amendment Bill to Garbage Management Act has been passed, according to Solid Waste Management and Resource Mobilisation Centre. The draft was tabled in the Bill Committee of the Cabinet about a year ago. “The Bill Committee approved it yesterday,” said Dr Sumitra Amatya, general manager, SWMRMC.

The government had recently called Expressions of Interest (EoI) from the private sector to set up a garbage-fuelled plant in the Valley. Eighteen national and international firms have applied for the same.
