Camera thief held
JHAPA: Police in Ilam arrested Dhana Bahadur Rai, 42, for stealing a camera installed for observing red panda on Sunday. Rai of Maimajhuwa, Ilam, was held with a trap he had used to catch the endangered species. According to Inspector Rudra Chudal of the district police office of Ilam, he was arrested on the basis of the video footage caught by another camera installed in the Maimajhuwa community forest to monitor the activities of the species. “After another camera caught him stealing the camera and setting the trap, he was arrested from his home,”said Rai. Over five trapping cameras are installed in Mabu and Maimajhuwa VDCs in cooperation with the Red Panda Network Nepal, an organisation working in the field of red panda conservation. Red panda is found in the community forests of Mabu, Jamuna, Nayan bazaar, Mai Pokhari, Maimajhuwa, Puwa Majhuwa. Anyone found killing or smuggling the endangered species will have to pay up to Rs 40,000 fine or face 10 years prison sentence or both if found guilty.
