BUTWAL: The fifth edition of Book Review Award Ceremony was organised at Sundi Secondary School, Rupandehi, today.
According to Um Hong Gil Human Foundation, Captain Um Hong Gil, members of the Korean Broadcasting System (KBS), Korea, Narvada Devi Upadhaya, Vice Chair of Mayadevi Rural Municipality, Lekhnath Poudel, Chief Administrative Officer, Arun Kumar Tiwari, Ward Chairman of Rural Municipality and Tara Malla, Acting Chairperson of the school management committee along with students, teachers and parents attended the event.
Captain Um Hong Gil distributed 10 buffaloes (under livelihood support) worth NPR 600,000 to 10 awardees who secured 1st and 2nd position from each group and NPR 122,500 cash prize with certificates to 25 other students.
The contest was classified into 5 levels - Lower Basic Level (1-3), Medium Basic Level (4-6), Higher Basic Level (7-8), Secondary Level (9-10) and Higher Secondary Level (11-12). As per a statement issued by UHGHF, students had easy access to participate in the contest.
From each level, two students were awarded with Livelihood Support (1 Buffalo to each) and five students awarded with cash prizes which were categorised under the altitude of the highest mountains - Mt Everest, Mt Makalu, Mt Dhaulagiri and Mt Annapurna.
The school management had made an announcement regarding the contest on December 22, 2024 following which the students started collecting the books from the library for two weeks. The contest was organized on January 28 where altogether 732 students from Grade 1- 12 had participated.
The performance of students was evaluated by the evaluation committee on January 31, at least 35 students were awarded after which.
With the financial support of Um Hong Gil Human Foundation, Sundi Secondary School has been organizing the Book Review Contest twice a year, and has successfully implemented the first Book Review Contest in 2019.Unfortunately, due to the COVID 19 pandemic the contest was halted for two years. The school resumed the contest from November 2021. "This is the fifth edition of the contest that took place in 2024/25," Captain Um Hong Gill said.
UHGHF had, in the past, supported Sundi Secondary School with earthquake resistant RCC building (11 classrooms), gender friendly toilet, sufficient furniture and renovation of existing three buildings. It has also supported the school with an ICT lab, Library with more than 7500 books and boundary wall construction etc. "This is the 10th human school of UHGHF. Currently, the school runs classes from ECD to Grade 12 with 984 students. It is securing admirable results in government board exams and regional competitions as well," the statement added.
The Korean Broadcasting System (KBS) is one of the biggest and oldest television of South Korea, which was established 1927 as radio station and thoroughly, it's extending the media services. The KBS team's main objective is to capture and make documentary of Captain Um Hong Gil and his foundation work in Nepal. "KBS team participated in the ceremony, and team will also visit three Community schools located in Birethant, Kaski, Tatopani, Myagdi and Goldhunga, Kathmandu for documentary purpose," the statement added.
