Case to be filed against 9 held during Birtamod incident

Damak, June 19:

Preparation is underway to file a case against nine persons arrested at Birtamod on Saturday and Sunday under the Public Offence Act, police said. SP at the Jhapa district police office Yogendra Bahadur Katuwal said they have released 30 persons until today and that nine detainees would be sued for vandalising public property and disrupting law and order. An eight party meeting had suggested the administration initiate legal action against those who spread anarchy.

Although the curfew was lifted last night, life could not become normal even today. Traffic resumed, but shops, which were opened early morning, remained shut after 08:00 am after rumours were afloat that a clash could resume again.

Locals and security personnel had clashed on Saturday and Sunday over a lottery, which was organised by an NGO Navajiven Ko Shanti Samaj. A person had died and 35 hurt in the incident.

Meanwhile, SP Katuwal said that police, as alleged, has no hand in irregularity in the lottery. The DAO has issued arrest warrants for Gopal Thapa, Kamal Pokhrel and some other staffers of the NGO. They have fled since then.
