China shows interest in upgrading Beni-Jomsom road

MUSTANG: The Chinese side has shown interest in upgrading the Beni-Jomsom road.

The 27-kilometre track was opened by the Nepal Army and handed over to the Department of Roads around five years ago.

The interest in the road rose after a road along the Kaligandaki corridor reached the Korala transit point. Dubsequently, the government gave an approval for detailed study of the road to the Chinese side.

A team of eight Chinese engineers and two from the DoR carried out a detailed study of the road, according to Engineer at the District Development Committee Sakaldev Sharma.

Due to poor condition of the road, regular import-export activities between Nepal and China have not been possible. It may be noted that a team from the Legislature-Parliament had visited the transit point and recommended upgrading of the road.

The Beni-Jomsom section remains disrupted for almost two months in a year due to landslides and caving-in at various points of the road.
