Chitwan street children found involved in crimes

CHITWAN: It was difficult to believe that a 13-year-old girl can be involved in as many as 18 theft cases. However, a study done in Chitwan district has proved it true.

A study done among 30 street children by a team led by DSP Rajan Adhiakri of Chitwan District Police Office informed that most of the street children aged 10 to 18 are involved in drug addiction and criminal activities.

There are altogether 156 street children in the district, according to the research conducted in 2015 March-April by the Diyalo Family, a non-government organisation.

Out of them, 75 per cent are involved in drug abuse and 43 percent are involved in theft. Likewise, 20 percent are sexually abused.

Meanwhile, the campaign to make the district street children-free has been launched in the district, of late.

According to DSP Devendra Subedi, police have already rehabilitated 27 street children in eight centres of Chitwan and Gaidakot of Nawalparasi districts in the first phase.

Subedi further said after completing six months in the rehabilitation centre, police would train the kids according to their interests and hobbies.

If the budged is available, police are planning to expand the campaign, informed Subedi.
