CIAA grills Thapa for misuse of funds

Kathmandu, February 28:

The Commission for Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) today interrogated former home minister of the King Gyanendra-led cabinet, Kamal Thapa, for his role in misusing the state coffers.

Responding to the anti-corruption watchdog’s summon yesterday, Thapa appeared in the CIAA office where he was grilled for one-and-a-half hours.

According to Thapa, an investigation official questioned him on the expenses of the Home Ministry’s funds during his tenure.

“The questions were based on the Rayamajhi report,” Thapa added, referring to the commission probing the suppression of the Janandolan-II. The report had indicted him of corruption and misuse of state treasury.

“I request the CIAA to show the differences in the expenditure by the current Home Minister Krishna Prasad Sitaula and the former home ministers who came to office after the 1990 movement,” Thapa added.

A CIAA commissioner said today’s interrogation was just an initial one and that Thapa will be summoned again if necessary.

The Commission for Investigation of Abuse of Authority yesterday summoned Thapa along with another minister of the royal cabinet Dan Bahadur Shahi and former information and communication ministers Tanka Dhakal and Shrish SJB Rana.

“We hope that the others will also show up within the given time frame of seven days,” the commissioner said.
