Civil code can be amended: PM Oli

KATHMANDU: Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has made it clear that government was committed to practically implement the Civil and Criminal codes.

During a special programme organised by the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs in Kathmandu today, PM Oli reiterated that if there were any flaws, these could be corrected with amendments.

"I make a special request to the local levels and provincial governments to make people aware about the laws for the effective implementation," he said.

The PM also urged one and all not to make a hue and cry over the codes which are being implemented from today. Although some discomfort is created in the beginning with a new system, acts and rules in place, it could be made gradually normal.

According to him, if the laws violate socio-economic rights of citizens, these could be amended.

"It was imperative to incorporate the values of federal democracy, constitution and country's socio-politics in the Civil and Criminal Codes brought as per international practice," the PM underscored.

On the occasion, Acting Chief Justice Om Prakash Mishra expressed a belief that the Codes would be useful to ensure rule of law and good governance in the country.

Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs, Bhanubhakta Dhakal also said the Codes would be a milestone for the implementation of the new constitution.

However, the Codes could be amended as per the need, he added.
