Clash disrupts voting process

Khotang, November 26

The voting process was halted for two hours after a clash erupted when a man tried to cast votes in the name of his parents at Diprung Rural Municipality-based Shanti High School’s voting centre in Khotang today.

The dispute ran high after left alliance cadres protested when Prem Rai, a democratic alliance supporter tried to vote in the name of his patents. Police said the voting process was halted after cadres from left and democratic alliance took up the issue. District Election Officer Dinesh Khatri said voting resumed after agreement among the parties.

As per the agreement, one person could cast ballot in the name of two. Following the agreement, Prem reached the polling booth to vote in the name of his parents. The left alliance said the agreement was that one person could vote in the name of one person if he/ she was from the same family.

CDO Ekdev Adhikari said police arrested three persons, including Shubhakaji, Rai from the left alliance for their involvement in the case.
