Consensus must for political stability: PM


MAHENDRANAGAR; Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal today said consensus among the political parties was a must to end the political standoff dragging the country towards instability.

Referring to the UCPN-Maoist’s continuous obstruction of the parliament, he said, “Nobody should push the country towards conflict again.’’ He was speaking in

Mahendranagar during the Nepal Yatra for Education 2009.

“People are concerned whether the constitution would be written on time,’’ he added. “But I assure you that it would be drafted within the stipulated time.’’ He also said that despite the obstruction and non-cooperation from the UCPN-M, the constitutional committee has been working relentlessly.

‘’I urge all the stakeholders to come forward to solve the differences through dialogue,’’ he said, citing the election of the CC chair, special committee for army integration as some of the successes achieved by his government during its first 100 days. “We should be sensitive and responsible in this transitional period,’’ he said.

Officials from Australia, UK, Indonesia, Canada and India and children from India have been participating in the rally.

Two groups today started a rally from Mahendrnagar of Kanchhanpur and Kakadvitta of Jhapa. They would submit a memorandum to the President after a meeting in Kathmandu. Coordinator of the rally Dilli Chaudhari said they organised a rally to create public awareness on education.

PM Nepal also inaugurated a newly constructed building of Siddhanath Amar Higher Secondary School located at Gaddachauki today. In another function organised in Mahendranagar today, Maoist cadres waved black flags to the PM. The cadres also chanted anti-government slogans.

Issuing a press release in Kanchhanpur yesterday Joint National Struggle Committee of the UCPN-M had urged the people to boycott the programme.

Kanchhanpur chairman of the struggle committee Dansingh Chaudhari had also warned of physical action against people attending the programme.
