Constitutional Council fails to name CJ
KATHMANDU: The Constitutional Council (CC) headed by Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal could not take any decision today in the absence of the Opposition leader and Deputy Prime Minister.
The meeting was called in order to discuss the appointment of next Chief Justice and filling vacancies in several constitutional posts.
The Judicial Council has urged the Constitutional Council to select new CJ as incumbent Min Bahadur Rayamajhi is retiring on December 12.
The posts of Chief Election Commissioner and the Commissioners for Public Service Commission, Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority and Auditor General have been lying vacant for the last couple of years.
Due to the absence of Opposition leader Pushpa Kamal Dahal and Deputy Prime Minister Sujata Koirala, the meeting could not take any decision.
The meeting has been rescheduled for Monday.
"We met to discuss the crucial issues but could not take any decision," Chief Justice Min Bahadur Rayamajhi told The Himalayan Times.
Deputy Prime Minister Sujata Koirala is in Singapore for the treatment of her father and Nepali Congress President Girija Prasad Koirala, while Opposition leader Pushpa Kamal Dahal did not attend the meeting despite being invited.
Speaker Subas Chandra Nembang, Deputy Prime Minister Bijaya Kumar Gachhadar and Defence Minister Bidhya Devi Bhandari attended the meeting held at Singha Durbar.
