CPN (ML) demands withdrawal of Citizenship Certificate Act

Kathmandu, March 20

The CPN (ML) has concluded that the amendments proposed to the Citizenship Certificate Act-2006 to provide citizenship by descent in the name of mother and automatic naturalised citizenship to a foreign woman married to a Nepali national as against national interest.

It will weaken the nationality, if it is passed as such, the party said. The amendments were tabled at the federal Parliament. A standing committee meeting of the party demanded that the government withdraw such amendments and incorporate provisions on the citizenship amendment act in national interest.

The meeting also urged the government to carry out judicial probe into the citizenship certificate acquired by children of those who received Nepali citizenship by birth and residence in Nepal until April 1989.
