Dhankuta general strike enters 37th day

Dhankuta, January 21

Dhankuta dwellers demonstrated differently today with their demand that the town be declared the temporary capital of Province 1.

Violating the prohibitory order, the disgruntled denizens protested by banging plates from their balconies or yards for an hour. Locals of district headquarters Dhankuta demonstrated from their houses as they could not gather and take out a rally due to the prohibitory order. The demonstrators also hoisted black flags from their houses.

Both the administration’s prohibitory order and people’s agitation continued today. Dhankuta Provincial Capital Struggle Committee called the general strike halting transportation and closing marketplaces, financial and educational institutions from 6:00am to 5: 00pm.

Struggle committee coordinator Sundar Babu Shrestha said the strike would continue until the government revoked the decision and declared Dhankuta a provisional provincial capital.

The district folks have been demonstrating with the demand that the district be made the provincial capital of Province 1 for the past 37 days.
