DIG gets transferred, DSP faces action for beating up scribe

Itahari, November 26:

While the DIG of the Armed Police Force’s eastern regional headquarters Thakur Mohan Shrestha has been transferred, DSP Janak Giri faces action for beating up a journalist in Sunsari on Saturday.

The government transferred Shrestha, who allegedly directed officials under him to beat up president of Sunsari chapter of FNJ Govinda Ghimire. Shrestha’s transfer order came late in the evening today after over 100 journalists continued staging sit-in at the Sunsari District Police Office and padlocked the office of acting CDO Chiranjivi Adhikari. They had been staging agitation since Sunday demanding action against the guilty police personnel.

Meanwhile, a five-member committee has been formed to probe into the incident and recommend action against DSP Janak Giri, who was involved in assaulting Ghimire.

Journalists Rishi Rai and Keshav Ghimire, Khem Raj Pokhrel of CPN-UML and Rajiv Koirala of Nepali Congress are the members of the committee led by the administrative officer of the Sunsari DAO, Shrawan Kumar Pokhrel.

The committee has been told to submit its report within seven days.

DSP Giri had arrested and assaulted Ghimire for allegedly writing news against DIG Shrestha and took him around the Itahari bazaar for three hours on Saturday night.

District based seven political parties, civil society and various organisations expressed their solidarity with the journalists. A meeting of journalists today called for a social boycott of DIG Shrestha and Giri.

Meanwhile, the government has appointed DIG of APF’s far-western regional headquarters Krishna Kumar Tamang as the DIG of the APF’s eastern regional headquarters.
