Din in the House over drowning deaths

Kathmandu, August 6

Speaker Onsari Gharti Magar today ruled that the government  inform the House about the drowning deaths of four girls in Garuda Municipality of Rautahat district yesterday.

The speaker issued the ruling after lawmakers of the main opposition CPN-UML obstructed House proceedings demanding details of the incident from the government.

As soon as the House meeting began at 1:00pm today, UML Chief Whip Bhanu Bhakta Dhakal spoke in the House saying his party lawmakers would not allow the House proceedings to go on unless the government provided satisfactory answers to the House on the drowning deaths of four girls.

Terming the incident a result of gross negligence on the part of the contractor, Dhakal said, “The tragedy occurred because the contractor who dug the pit did not fill it up on time.”

Dhakal also demanded that the government provide compensation to the victims’ families.

As soon as Dhakal concluded his speech, all UML lawmakers stood up and ignored the speaker’s repeated pleas to sit down. The speaker then issued a ruling to the government to inform the House in the next meeting on the drowning death of four girls. After the speaker’s ruling, the UML lawmakers let the House resume its scheduled work.

CPN-Maoist Centre lawmaker Dulari Harijan wondered if anybody would be held responsible for the recklessness that cost the lives of four children.
