Divorce cases up at Lamjung District Court
LAMJUNG: The Lamjung District Court has witnessed an increase in divorce cases recently.
According to registrar at the court, Bhumi Prasad Sharma, with the enactment of new criminal codes and civil codes that have come into effect from August 17, a total of 109 divorce cases have been filed by 79 women and 30 men at the court. The total of 68 cases that reached adjudication include 62 filed by women and six by men.
In the fiscal year 2072/73, of the total 116 divorce cases filed at the court, 100 cases were adjudicated while hearing of 16 cases were postponed. Similarly, in the fiscal year 2073/74, a total of 108 divorce cases were filed, of which 62 cases reached adjudication while hearing of 16 cases were postponed. Likewise, in the fiscal year 2074/75, of the total 152 divorce cases filed at the court, 133 cases were adjudicated while 18 cases were postponed.
According to District Judge Komal Prasad Acharya, 146 divorce cases have been filed at the district court, of which 99 cases have reached adjudication while 47 others are pending in the current fiscal year.
The judge cited the social factors such as customs of child marriage, polygamy, foreign employment, among others as the causes of soaring cases of divorce.
