SOLUKHUMBU: A woman who could not undergo a normal childbirth at a local primary health centre was airlifted by a doctor to the Solukhumbu District Hospital in Phaplu for the delivery.

Nirmala Rai of Bung in the district was at first brought to the primary health centre in Sotang VDC. The health workers at the primary health centre later referred her to the District Hospital after she needed to undergo an urgent operation.

Soon after the referral, Dr Mingma Chhiri Sherpa, who is also the Chief of the District Health Office, Solukhumbu, landed at Sotang by a helicopter.

There at the District Hospital, the woman gave birth to the child through a caesarian section. Both the mother and the child are now in better condition, according to the hospital sources.

Dr Sherpa said the cost of chartering the helicopter would be borne by the District Hospital itself.
