Domestic tourists up in Kanchanjunga base camp

FURLINGLING, DECEMBER 31

As many as 70 residents of Taplejung district reached the Kanchanjunga base camp last month. Over 100 locals of the district are ascending to the camp.

“Some youths are planning to reach the base camp in the near future,” shared Dharke Sherpa, an entrepreneur of Dhunsa. “In the previous year, no Nepali trekker could be seen ascending to the base camp. I did not notice any local of Taplejung turning up here as a tourist,” he said.

“But now the situation has changed. Residents of the district are thronging the base camp,” he added. “The inflow of domestic tourists has provided relief to tourism entrepreneurs.”

The hotels and shops of the tourism area remained closed and tourism activities were also completely halted due to the pandemic. However, mobility of tourists has gradually started increasing in the area.
