Dr KC prepares for fresh hunger strike, this time from Ilam

KATHMANDU: Crusader against corruption, medical activist and senior orthopaedic surgeon Dr Govinda KC is likely to announce another fast unto death, his 16th, from Ilam district this time around.

According to KC's aide Dr Abhishek Raj Singh, today marks the last day of ultimatum given by KC to the government to fulfil his demands that had been agreed upon at the end of his last hunger-strike.

"Dr KC has reached Ilam in preparation for another round of Satyagraha (non-violent resistance), however, we hope the government honours its past commitments and will address the demands," stated Dr Singh.

Dr Govinda KC and the government had reached a nine-point agreement on July 26 ending the doctor’s 15th hunger strike.

The government had then agreed to amend 22 provisions of the Medical Education Bill in accordance with Dr KC’s demand. The agreement is yet to be honoured.

However, according to THT's Jagdishor Pandey, during a sub-committee meeting of the Education and Health committee on January 1, the minister and  ruling Nepal Communist Party (NCP) lawmakers said they will not include all the contents of the nine-point agreement signed with Dr Govinda KC in the National Health and Education Bill.
