KATHMANDU: Metropolitan Traffic Police Division (MTPD) today disclosed that within a period of six months and four days, a total of 1,507 road accidents occurred in the Kathmandu Valley.

Kathmandu tops the list with 1,103 cases of mishaps followed by Lalitpur (273) and Bhaktapur (131) in a row, data compiled by MTPD from July 16 to December 20 has shown. A majority of those accidents have occurred between 6 pm to 6 am, says MTPD.

Gaushala, Maharajgunj, Singh Durbar, Koteshwor, Durbarmarg, Baneshwor, Kalanki, Sinamangal, Swoyambhu and Boudha are 'black spots', says MTPD.

Inspector Krishna Dutta Bhatta at MTPD argued that accident could be minimised to a great extent if the roads had no abrupt bends and curls and vehicles limit their speed.

He also blamed on the lack of flyovers at intersections as fuelling accidents. He said that the efforts of the traffic police alone could not avert road accidents without a law-abiding motorists and sensible public.

According to data unveiled by MTPD yesterday, road traffic accidents in the Kathmandu Valley exceeded well over 300 in the last one month. The data suggested that the road accidents have not subsided, instead, they are increasing by leaps and bounds.

Recent MTDP data showed that a total of 341 accidents occurred from November 16 to December 15. A majority of those mishaps are attributed largely to reckless and drunken-driving, overloading of vehicles, overspeeding and malfunctioning of vehicles.

The Metropolitan Traffic Police Division has concluded from its investigation that the drivers are among the prime culprits in most of the cases of road accidents.
