Drug smuggling on the rise in Dharan

Police have arrested as many as 128 people for their involvement in smuggling drugs in Dharan in the last five months alone.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Dhakendra Prasad Khatiwada at Area Police Office said 125 males and three females were arrested on charges of drug smuggling after they launched ‘Suru Delta Operation’.

According to Khatiwada, the number of people involved in drug smuggling had increased due to high number of drug users in the city.

Police say drugs are brought to Dharan from India’s Jogbani through Biratnagar of Morang.

As per the Drug Transaction Act, people arrested on the charge of drug smuggling can be kept in custody for up to 90 days for investigation. Anyone found guilty of drug trafficking can be sentenced to up to 15 years in jail, along with a fine of Rs 500,000.
