2 aftershocks hit Ramechhap, tremors felt in Kathmandu

KATHMANDU: The National Seismological Centre (NSC) on Monday morning recorded two significant aftershocks of the 2015 Gorkha earthquake of local magnitudes 4.6 and 4.7 in Ramechhap district of eastern Nepal.

The first seismic event of the day, which was of local magnitude 4.6, was recorded at 9:22 am.  It was followed by another light tremor, with slightly greater size, at 10:06 am.

Their tremors were felt in the Kathmandu Valley and adjoining districts also.

According to the NSC, the epicentre of the first aftershock lied near Salu, with coordinates 27.36 °N and 86.12 °E, while that of the latter was close to Swanra in the district with coordinates 27.38°N and 86.13°E.

Thousands of aftershocks followed the mainshock on April 25, 2015. Magnitude and frequency of seismic events, however, have gone down gradually.

NSC has processed data of significant tremors -- mainly of local magnitude 4.o or above. It has informed the public about magnitude, epicentre and time of 478 tremors, which were of ML 4.o to 7.6, and some minor ones.

The last significant aftershock was recorded on February 18 with its epicentre in Dhading district.
